Description
Because of habitat loss and overhunting, wild turkeys (Meleaagris gallopavo) disappeared from Ontario in 1909. Although they were still present in other parts of North America, they were almost totally gone (extinct by 1930. In Ontario, a very successful reintroduction began when about 4400 wild turkeys were released across the province. Today wild turkeys are a very common sight in Southern Ontario and many other parts of North America.
