Description
The red fox is one of those animals that has gained a bad reputation from folklore and children's literature. We often hear stories of "the fox in the chicken coop" and tales of their boldness, cunning and deceitful nature. Although farmers do have to protect their chickens from falling victim to the neighborhood fox, they also benefit from the vast numbers of crop destroying mammals like voles, mice, squirrels, and rabbits which make up most of a fox's diet. Rather than having the characteristics portrayed in children's songs and literature, foxes tend to be secretive, shy and nervous. As well as being predators themselves, they can find themselves victims of hunting coyotes and wolves. Red foxes range in size from 24" to 35" ( 60 to 90 cm.) in length excluding the tail which accounts for about one third of their total length. Even though they're called red foxes, they can come in other colors including brown, black and silver.
