Description
The Northern Saw Whet Owl (aegolius acadicus) is one of the smallest owls in North America measuring 17–22 cm (6.7–8.7 in) in length. They get their name from the "skiew" call they make when alarmed resembling the sound of a saw being sharpened on a whetstone. These birds are nocturnal and can usually be found roosting just above eye level close to the trunk of very dense bushes or conifers during the day.
