Description
The giraffe, (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) is the tallest animal in the world with an average height of 16 to 18 feet (about 5 metres). Even newborn giraffes are about six feet tall. Their long necks allow them to reach into tall trees where they eat leaves and shoots, consuming about 100 lbs (45 kg.) a day. The acacia tree is their favourite. Their long tough tongues allow them to devour leaves, twigs, thorns and all. Even though their necks are extremely long, they have only seven vertebrae, the same as in a human neck. A group of giraffes is called a tower. The marking s on a giraffe are unique to each individual much the same as a human fingerprint.
