Description
Sometimes referred to as the" sea swallow", Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) is a medium sized tern and is the most widespread tern in North America. Although populations of Common Terns were greatly depleted in the 19th century milinary trade, because of conservation efforts, they thrive today. A group of common terns is called a committee of terns. These acrobatic birds are exciting to watch as they hover above the water before plunging head first to catch small fish from lakes, rivers and oceans.
Photographed at Port Credit harbor on the north shore of Lake Ontario with a Canon 5D, Mark III.
