Description
Deadvlei is a white clay pan in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft Park. Deadvlei literally means dead valley. This area receives very little rainfall, but occasionally, heavy rains would flood the Tsauchab River creating enough water to sustain camel thorn trees in the temporary shallow pools. Over the years, sand dunes reaching heights of over 300 metres moved in blocking the river. With lack of water, the camel trees, believed to be over 800 years old died, turned black from the scorching sum, but did not decay because of the lack of moisture. Like "footprints in the sand" these marvelous trees serve as a reminder of a landscape long ago. Today, Deadvlei is one of Namibias most popular tourist destimations.
