Description
The Eastern Screech Owl ( otus asio) is one of the more common owls found in Eastern North America. Their preferred habitat tends to be in deciduous woodlands or in trees in city parks where they roost and nest in naturally occurring tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes. The Eastern Screech owl is one of the smaller owl species in North America with the females slightly larger than the male. They prey on small mammals like mice, squirrels, chipmunks and bats. Insects, reptiles and small birds also contribute to their diet. Eastern Screech Owls often mate for life only accepting another mate if one partner dies. The red morph (rufous colored) Eastern Screech owl is less common than the gray morph, accounting for about a third of the total population.
